Default Mediterranean Sea temps

Although Evert says that sea temps are locally over 30C, I can find no
evidence on the IR imagery at the moment, (at least in the western Med). The
values I get from this afternoon's NOAA16 pass are in the range 20C to 26C,
and look pretty normal for August to me. See actual sea temps at this link:

The Mediterranean is bath tub warm (locally over 30 C!), so once the
temperatures aloft start dropping - in the coming autumn - ... batten
down your hatches ... hell will break loose over there.

It was mentioned a couple of times on BBC Weather last week, sea temps 32 in
the med, highest since 1940s (?). Didn't look for proof tho.

The temperatures indicated in the above link look incorrect, to me
(even for the Western Med).

11 of 13 Mediterranean buoys are reporting sea temperatures in the
range 26 to 30 deg C, with only two as low as 24.8 and 25.0. Buoy
61669 in the middle of the Central Med, SE of Sicily, reported 29.1
yesterday evening. That's spectacular.

Default Mediterranean Sea temps

Thank you all for your interest. I stand corrected, and will check the
satellite derived sea temps again today. On reflection, I think that the
apparent temperature of the radiating surface may appear low due to the
obscuring effect of a substantial layer of moisture in the lower atmosphere.
The satellite sensor also sees just the water skin, and this could be at a
lower temperature than the water in the top metre or so, due to evaporation,
given the right conditions. Other factors such as cloud elements smaller
then the resolution of the sensor, or thin layers of very cold cloud, may
also affect the apparent temperature of the underlying surface.

The OTIS site gives a good visual impression of temperatures and anomalies.
This latest map shows the positive anomaly, covering much the west and
central parts of the ocean, is in the range 3-6C.

The actual map is:

http://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/products/O...S.glbl_sst.gif

Yet again, the positive anomalies around the fringes of the Arctic are very
large as well.
