What i would call "Booming" went on for half an hour and the booming kept coming time and time again. It was quite frightning at the time i can tell you! Gary Yes, a summer thing as i remember. There was even rumours of submarine bases being carved out under Berry Head it was so loud, regular and man made. A deep, warm, round almost subsonic "whoomfing" taking perhaps half a minute to cycle emanating from the sea. Les ISTR that there was a VLF station down that way for communicating with submersed submarines. I wonder if that's where the "whoomfing" was coming from?????? When I was a Leading Radio Operator in the RN in the early 1960s stationed at Whitehall W/T in Admiralty I ran the submarine VLF broadcast. The transmitter was at Rugby. As far as I am aware there's no other transmitter in the West Country. IIRC there was a NATO transmitter at Dounreay, near Thurso, in Caithness. -- MCC I can hear a lot for distance explosions to the NNW of Ringwood Hants this morning. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
