Only a bit OT and ideal for Christmas ;-)
Noticed a "Weather Observation Kit" on 50% off sale for GBP 5.00 at Sainsburys today. It's got a basic anemometer, rain guage thermometer, record book etc. Supposed to be OK for 8+ Might be a good little stocking filler |

My interest was sparked by a Christmas present of the 'Observer's Book of Weather' when I was (I think) 10 years old. Martin. |

I got the same book as a present for being a good little boy at the dentist's. I was in Mr Brown's class so I must have been 9. But I was already cutting the weather map out of the Daily Express. Still got them too, as I discovered when I moved. (Iris Says: "Who's wants a little anorak?") Philip |

(Iris Says: "Who's wants a little anorak?") .... my 'collection' was based on the Daily Telegraph: each month's set of charts was carefully folded and stored in a standard envelope; unfortunately, I don't have them anymore. I now have three different editions, though it might be truer to say three different books, as each new version seems to have been written starting completely from scratch. -- John Hall "Sir, I have found you an argument; but I am not obliged to find you an understanding." Philip I got mine for my 11th birthday, followed just over 2 years later by the Air Ministry Meteorological Office Observers Handbook (Price £1 1s 0d) for Christmas. (Both of which I still have). My 'OBOTW' is long gone but I still have a 1952 'Observers Handbook', (12s 6d) also a Christmas present. We had a very good geography master and he generated my interest. Another book I had was 'The Drama of the Weather' by Sir Napier Shaw. This took a highly romantic approach to weather processes and I think was written before frontal theory had been fully developed. By my right hand, as I type, is 'Climate and the British Scene' which is an essential read. -- Alan White Twenty-eight miles NW of Glasgow, overlooking Lochs Long and Goil in Argyll, Scotland.
