A sunny morning with the strong winter sunshine lifting the temperature to 5.4C after a minimum of 1.7 deg C. Hoar frost came quickly yesterday evening but then we had some showers with temperature 2-3 deg C (a bit sleety but you had to look hard). Hoar frost early on but now very damp on all surfaces with dewpoint circa 4 deg C. Cumulus clouds building to the west and radar shows showers so our sun may not last long. Wind very light with mean 2 knots. Richard did you get an air frost in the South Hams, it looked quite misty and still your way earlier? That was quick, now light rain showers and rainbows! Temp 5.9 deg C. Ground even damper now :-) I guess if we got a really heavy shower it could turn wintry but I'm not holding my breath. Here in the Otter Valley we didn't quite manage an air frost though driving back last night at around midnight there was ice on the car roof and the fields were white with frost despite the car thermometer reading 3.5C. It went down to 0.4C at 09:00 this morning (rather late for a minimum temperature). _______________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Plenty of rainbows (and brief sharp showers) in west Cornwall as well ( see www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/1712.html ) With the breeze & showers persisting overnight, the minimum temperature held up at 6.5C, after a max of 10.9 yesterday. The max is going to be very similar today. The daffs on south facing slopes are now developing buds, some whould be opening in 10 days or so. Graham Penzance |

Richard did you get an air frost in the South Hams, it looked quite misty and
still your way earlier? Not quite - air min +0.5C. Hoar frost deposits on cars by ~1920 yesterday evening, but the temperature did not drop much thereafter. Some light showers overnight melted the hoar frost but refroze later leading to light icing on car surfaces only by daylight. Currently +2.2C. Had a smashing day on the high moor today. It was remarkably mild at 2000ft. Spotted some crocus bulbs ~6inchs tall just down from Belstone! Richard. Dartington, South Hams. |
