There are snowdrops, crocus and daffodils in full flower in our village
on the Isle of Arran. We have a Verbascum ( Aaron's Rod) growing in our
garden. There's a bit of wind/frost damage, but that hasn't stopped it
growing. It's now about two feet high, with flower buds fairly well
formed. Roger Phillips says it should be in flower from June until
August. Can't wait to see the lovely yellow flowers in February.

Our new weather station is now set up. Current temperature out 2C (warm
and cosy indoors), barometric pressure 1023.5. Overcast skies. At the
moment the anemometer is showing no movement at, but then it's still
attached to the weather station at 4 foot above the ground. Sometime
next week it's going up on the roof.

It's been the most beautiful day today. Sunshine, blue skies and warm
enough (just) for a cup of tea and chocolate biscuit in the garden this
morning.

I'm beginning to wonder if I live in the same country !?

Definitely not spring-like here nor has it been yet.
Grass stopped growing (after a brief spurt in early January) about 2 weeks ago.
Soil temperatures are depressed and as far as I can remember plants are just
about the same in terms of growth as last year. No crocuses, no daffs, just
snowdrops and a few primroses. Although the mahonias flowered unusually early
and are now over.

Cheers,

Will (from a still rather wintry looking Haytor)

:-O

No frost !!! That is unbelievable. But I do believe you if you see what I mean.

I really do think I live in a different country now :-)
Spring seems to be bursting everywhere but Haytor, anyone else *not*
experiencing Spring-like conditions ?

I'm not bothered BTW just curious.

Will.

I've been struck by the amount of bird nesting activity so early in
the year in East London. I have a pair of collared doves building a
nest in a conifer and I noticed a blackbird was gathering nesting
material this afternoon. I've also seen bumblebees out and about -
though precious little blooms to visit so far.

I believe the above nature activity is the earliest ever I've recorded
in this locality...

Just the same here as with you, Will. The sun was out today, and it was
very pleasant, but a max temp of 3.5C, so hardly spring-like. No sign of
any plant or grass growth at all, nor would I expect it for a few weeks yet.

North Wales

Snowdrops out here - just as they should be.
No daffodils - not even the early hybrids (January Gold, February Silver
and Rheinveldt's[?sp] Early Sensation) I planted, just to try and have
a daff of some sort in flower for St. David's day since there isn't
a hope of the native species (narcissus pseudonarcissus obvalaris, Lent
Lily) flowering as our hill faces the wrong way.

Crocus, very variable since it depends on what species - planting a
varied selection will result in flowers from Nov/December onwards.

Early saxifrages are starting break buds but IIRC they depend on daylight
hours rather than temperature.

We have got Daffs, Grass growing like mad, and very mild.

I went out on Friday night in just a small overcoat (as well as trousers,
etc for those that are quick with a quip!!!) - it almost reminded me of a
summers night.

Thanks
