Another flash of lightning right over head, so I'm turning my computer
off for the next half hour.

Turning it off isn't enough. Ideally a computer needs 4 feet isolation
from a wall socket including the telephone line. Not possible in most
UK homes though. Perhaps some sort of sacrificial shielding such as a
few empty beer cans?

I unplugged computer & TV etc.

Storms seem to have passed now, but I will keep an eye out for any more
on the way.
