================================================== ==============================
=== This forecast represents the *PERSONAL OPINION* of the Chief forecaster at the privately run Haytor meteorological office in Devon on how the weather may unfold in Devon next week. The Chief forecaster will take no responsibility whatsoever for any actions arising from its use. It is provided freely in the spirit of freedom and the great love for meteorology that we personally enjoy and wish to share freely with others. ================================================== ============================== === Summary valid for Saturday 06/01/07 to Saturday 13/01/07 TOI (time of issue) Thursday 04/01/07 1900 UK local time This forecast is for all areas in Devon south of the A30 as far west as the Tamar and as far east as the Exe. Headline summary: Very high confidence that the week will be predominantly mild and changeable with heavy rain and gales at times. Synoptic summary: High confidence that during the week deep Atlantic depressions will move east just to the north of Scotland. Winds will be mostly from the west or southwest with occasional northwesterly interludes ahead of weak ridges of high pressure. Detailed forecast: Moderate confidence in all aspects. On Saturday a waving cold front to the south of Devon will give some rain in the morning which will die out in the afternoon. Winds light and variable at first then picking up to a moderate or fresh southwesterly in the evening. Temperatures 9-11C but close to 8C on Dartmoor. On Sunday the morning will be cloudy but mainly dry apart from some drizzle on Dartmoor. Moderate or fresh southwesterly winds will increase during the afternoon to become strong by evening with gales on exposed headlands and over high ground. Rain setting in during the afternoon and becoming heavy. Temperatures 9-11C generally. On Monday overnight rain will clear away quickly to leave a mainly dry day with sunny intervals. Perhaps a few showers on Dartmoor. Winds quickly easing to light or moderate westerly. During the evening the wind backs southwesterly and strengthens as more rain spreads in from the west. Temperatures in the range 8-11C. Tuesday looks like being a thoroughly wet day with strong to gale force southwesterly winds and very mild with temperatures 9-12C. Lots of cloud shrouding the moors and other hills. Possibly turning a bit drier later in the afternoon but still with outbreaks of rain into the evening and persistent rain and drizzle and fog on Dartmoor. On Wednesday overnight rain and hill fog should clear to leave a bright and cooler day with a few showers and some sunshine. Winds easing to west or northwest moderate. Temperatures around 10C generally but 6-8C on Dartmoor. Rain and very strong winds spreading in from the west during the evening. Thursday looks like being a very showery day with strong to gale force southwesterly winds slowly veering west to northwesterly. Thunder possible in coastal areas and hail is likely over Dartmoor and lower hills. Temperatures 5-7C over Dartmoor but generally 8-10C. More rain and drizzle at times on Friday and Saturday with fresh west or southwest winds. Turning very mild again with temperatures 10-12C. A happy new year from all of us here in Haytor meteorological office and thanks for using this site! ![]() On Wednesday overnight rain and hill fog should clear to leave a bright and cooler day with a few showers and some sunshine. Winds easing to west or northwest moderate. Temperatures around 10C generally but 6-8C on Dartmoor. Rain and very strong winds spreading in from the west during the evening. It's a sign of the times that the word "cool" is being used in January, a word usually only appropriate between approximately April and September. This spell of weather's so far removed from long-term means - 12C in January must be about equivalent to 21C in October - that even single-figure maximum temperatures are a luxury :-( Oh well, GFS going for another continental high the week of the 15th. Not very cold but at least something closer to normal.... Nick |

OK Will, as promised, my first attempt at a forecast for the East Riding of
Yorkshire only. I decided that attempting one for all of Yorkshire is far too much of a task for me. Saturday. A generally dry day, but possibly some light rain or drizzle in the morning. Mainly overcast, but some sun in the afternoon. Mild at 8c. Sunday. Overcast with light rain and drizzle, becoming more persistent later. Strong and gusty SW breeze especially on hill tops and the coast. Temp 9 to 10c. Monday. Rain clearing overnight and a dry and breezy day with plenty of sunshine. Perhaps an early evening ground frost in Wolds valleys, before cloud increases before midnight. Max 8c. Tuesday. Becoming mild, wet and breezy overnight on Monday. Rain only clearing slowly during the morning. Possibly some late sun as the breeze veers Westerly and temp falls during afternoon. Possible ground frost in Wolds valleys and prone areas overnight. Max 12 to 13c, falling later in afternoon. Wednesday. A bright breezy day with plenty of sunshine, though possibly a blustery shower in western areas in the morning. Early evening ground frost possible, before clouding over by midnight. Max 6/7c. Thursday. Some light rain overnight clearing by mid morning, then a bright day with showers, though these dying out by evening. Ground frost early evening, possibly a shortlived air frost in prone areas by midnight. Max 7/8c. Friday. Mild and wet max 10c. Weekend. Cooler and showery, mainly dry on Sunday. Breezy. Possible air frost on Saturday night. -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |
