Default Davis Weather Monitor II Wind Sensor Problem

This morning i have noticed that there is no wind speed being recorded
on the monitor although the direction seems to be working fine. A quick
look out of the window shows that the cups are going round fine in the
wind and the junction box within the house is all plugged in fine and I
have re-booted the unit.

I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem and whether I
am going to find it;s the unit that needs replacing. When I am dressed
I will check the wire from the house.

Any help much appreciated.

thanks

Certainly double-check the cable and connections as a first step,
especially if you have any cable extensions fitted. If it's been up
there a long time then it's unlikely that the cups have slipped down
the spindle enough to break magnetic contact to the reed switch, but
this is technically also a possiblility.

But in general after some years of operation the reed switch that
registers the speed opf the cups can become a bit temperamental and
work sometimes but not others. You can get the anemometer repaired or
alternatively buy a new anemometer (which obviously gives a minimum of
downtime if the old one is sent away for repair) or some folk do both
so as always to have a spare should the situation ever recur. Email me
for further details if you wish.

They are mechanical and rated for only so many thousand million
operations. Each revolution of the cups is one operation of the switch,
they soon add up.

You can get the anemometer repaired or alternatively buy a new
anemometer

Or repair it yourself, reed switches are pence, the P&P will normally
dwarf their cost. I've done my WM918 anemometer several times using this
reed Aleph HYR153215/35AT available from CPC for 70p inc VAT:

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea...sp?SKU=SW00172

Apart from have a few basic electrinics skills and kit for disassembly
and soldering a can of conformal coating is also required, such as
Electrolube HPA200H:

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea...?SKU=SAHPA200H

Tips:

Always support the reed wires near the reed when bending otherwise the
chances of breaking the wire/glass seal are very high.

Once the switch is replace give the completed unit a good squirt of the
coating to seal everything and prevent corrosion. Leave to dry fully. Try
not to flex the wires close to the board after the coating has dried so
as to not to break that seal.

My last repair has lasted a couple of years maybe not longer.

Thinking further about this problem. Last year I set up one of my original
Davis anemometers at the airfield. The metal bits that almost make contact
(a bit non-technical but take the cups part off and you'll see what I mean)
just needed the gentlest of cleans with glasspaper before it started working
again......and has continued working since even through the 71knots of last
Saturday. However the intermittent temperature related problem is also
familiar.

That sound suspiciously like a failing reed switch to me, I had mine
repaired a couple of years ago and it was not too expensive and the turn
around time reasonable.

Thanks Alan,

It's still working, may I ask where you sent it for repair.

thanks

Have exactly the same problem with my Vantage Pro!
Just noticed the wind speed is showing 0 on the console but direction is
still working.
Downloaded the data and wind speed and direction have not recorded
anything since 20.00

I'm wondering if it's the same problem?

I had it repaired by McMurdo
http://www.mcmurdo.co.uk/where_to_buy/service.html.

The contact was given to me by John Dann who provided my station
originally. Theywere the Davis UK authorised repair centre at the time and
probably still are. I think I was charged around £30 although John Dann said
it would probably cost £50.00+.

If it costs much more a new anemometer would be a better option.

Alan
