"Climate and the British Scene" by Gordon Manley. If you search on his
name on www.amazon.co.uk you'll find that several different editions of
the book are available second-hand at varying prices.

Anything by H H Lamb, particularly "Climate: past, present
and future" (2 vols).

Less technical but a very good read is Robin Stirling's "The
weather of Britain".

Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey.

Less technical but a very good read is Robin Stirling's "The

Or the works of Allan Watts :

Instant Weather Forecasting has a picture of a sky on every other page,
with what it may mean in the text.

Instant Wind Forecasting uses the same format.

Worth Googling to see what else he has in print - Cruising Weather is
worthwhile but too technical and too specialised for Mr Bennett's
requirement.

Does the Observer's Book Of Weather still exist?

Mine does, but the Observer's series of books ceased years ago.

The Climate of London by T.J. Chandler is a very good, if old, weather
book. While the title covers London its findings are relevant for any
large town or city - covering topics such as the urban heat island
effect etc.

I bought a very old mint condition copy on the web two years ago

As, probably, does mine.

but the Observer's series of books ceased years ago.

Knew I'd been careless in drafting that -

Usborne and Dorling Kindersley seem to try to fill that niche.
