Force 10 storm in the west of the Netherlands today - the worst since
27 October 2002. Amsterdam Schiphol http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/EHAM.html The National Crisis Centre of the Ministry of the Interior is urging people to stay indoors because of the danger from falling roof tiles and tree branches and other blowing debris. Most Dutch trains are at a standstill this evening because of tracks blocked by trees. Emergency accommodation is being prepared at Utrecht station for people who cannot get home. Earlier in the day Amsterdam Central station was evacuated because part of the glass roof was blown down. Near Venlo in the SE of the country a train driver was slightly hurt when his train hit a fallen tree. Delft station also had to be evacuated because of damage to its roof. 2 people were killed near Arnhem when a tree fell on their car; a motorcyclist was also killed by a falling tree. 6 people were injured in a bus that was blown off the road in Tholen in the SW of the country. A number of motorways had to be closed because of accidents involving lorries. In Utrecht 6 people were injured when a crane fell on to a university building. http://www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artike...m_verkeer.html Colin Youngs Brussels http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/EBBR.html Gale force at Brussels Airport recently but not so bad here in the city where I work - also 15șC this afternoon. |
