Default [WR] Haytor 24/01/07 (no precip, well done SE!)

Well in the end all we got was 0.4 mm precip.
So we missed out this time.
Temp at 0715 +3.2
DP +2
Warm sector conditions for us.

Congrats to all in the SE who got a light fall.
Sadly a lot of it will melt during today. But enjoy if you can ....

Chance of some decent snow in Kent later today/tonight.

Will.

Why just Kent, does SE Essex get included or is it a case of altitude

Because in a N, N/E flow that bit of Kent sticks out into the N.Sea and
showers running parallel to the coast make first landfall there. As the
Essex coast line runs NE/SW they tend to not come so far in land unless
there is a more E/SE component. But you know this anyway Keith - you're just
jealous ;-)
I think we'll get some showers anyway in the next couple of days.

Dave, S.Essex. 1cm snow overnight, now melting slowly. Light snow. 1.0C,
98%RH, , overnight minimum -2.3C

I don't feel bad for missing out.
If it's going to snow, then it has to be real, and it has to stick for
over 24 hours

On Celeb Big Brother this morning, Cleo walked out into the garden, and
scooped up a bit of snow that was left in the seats... it was like she
was taking it back inside to stick inside the freezer... quickly before
it melts

I didn't see any laying snow on the grass

Low ground south-west England is facing the reality of a snow-less
winter.
It's about time to start mentioning it now. Only a few weeks of winter
is now left

Just looked out the window, Exmoor is looking slightly white, hard to
tell from a large distance.
They may have had a wintry shower. A light dusting perhaps

Yes, looks good for Kent tonight.

Is Kent a good place statistically for snow? Always seems to get a good
amount from any easterly/north-easterly

(WR: Snow showers now penetrating further inland and light snow falling in W
Sheffield)

I don't see it. Certainly not "10-15cm" as mentioned by several
forecasters on the TV and radio this morning.

In the days when we used to have snow in the SE, Kent was always very
badly affected.

I've always thought that the SE (esp. Kent) may well get significantly
fewer days with snow/snow cover than up here in Bolton but the
chances of getting a really good dumping, say 6" or more are rather
moe than here. Basically whaty I am saying is that our snow comes
in unimpressive but relatively frequent1-2" doses but a deep fall is
less likely than in the SE.
I have no idea if this is backed up by any statistics, it's just my
feeling that the potential for a really serious fall in the SE is
higher
than up here.

Same here Col. At my altitude we get quite a few little falls of 1-2 cm (occ
3-4) and my largest in the past 4 years was 10cm (a moderate fall) and that was
in March. Best situations for Haytor are a cold, wet westerly (531 DAM
thickness) or a slow moving occlusion coming up from the south against a NE'ly
cold airflow. Locals tell me that the last real disruptive snow on Dartmoor was
in 1979 when people were skiing down Exeter high street and cross-country skiing
was possible on the moor. A friend who was born and bred in these parts tells me
that skiing on Dartmoor was fairly common in the 50s and 60s. Last February it
would have been possible to ski a bit on the high moor (20-30cm level snow) but
not far below 500m asl.
