Such low temperatures are uncommon here without a snow cover. .... similar comment would apply here Norman. Looking back at our short record (since 2000), minima = -6°C aren't that common anyway; the lowest value (over these few years) was -6.7°C on 1st January, 2002 and that was NOT accompanied by a snow cover of any sort, but generally, we need some sort of snow cover for something below -4°C to be reliably experienced (bearing in mind these comments apply to a suburban back garden, not a 'standard' open-field site). Hoar frost has persisted all day in the shade. I suspect that the temperature is rather lower than the Davis VP is indicating. With not a breath of wind and the sun shining strongly at a low angle into the louvres I think the body of the instrument is being warmed and the temperature sensor is being affected by this. No doubt the indicated temperature will start to plummet in about an hour or so. Norman. (delete "thisbit" twice to e-mail) -- Norman Lynagh Weather Consultancy Chalfont St Giles 85m a.s.l. England |
