Hi, All,
This must have been the sunniest first week in February on record in NE England. Virtually cloudless skies have produced 55.9hr(R&D) or 8hr / day average here - wonderful. That could well be it for a while, though. Easterly flows are not kind to us and can be persistent. The snow that we shall inevitably have will soon turn dirty and slushy. It will hang around for days as it does in the NE Pennines and skies will be overcast with hill fog. Everything will be wet and miserable and temperatures will be stuck on +1C. No one around here wishes for this type of snow, let's hope it goes quickly. North Sea snow showers with a low dew point, dry snow, clean air, good visibility - now that's what we want! Ken Copley 253metres, nr Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham http://copley.mysite.orange.co.uk North Sea snow showers! Whatever happened to them? Although the forecasters have promised us a covering the last two nights, we could almost have counted the flakes. Just when the showers seemed to be building up on the coast, as soon as they moved inland, nothing happened. I counted 4 separate bands of showers in the last 24 hours when it looked like a decent dumping was on the way that just evaporated. Can't see us getting much here tomorrow Ken, but as you say I used to hate the snow soup that you get in these situations when in Penistone. -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |

British Rail don't like the snow we get, dry and powdery. Gets in everywhe http://srv1.howhill.com/weather/view...2005&m=02&d=24 Scroll down to the bottom, that interior drift got at least twice as big. Ken really knows how to cheer a chap up, if there is one thing I hate it is temps just above freezing with overcast grey skies or hill fog. It's just cold, damp and depressing, ugh... Drop the temp to below freezing and it's just cold, the dampness goes and lifts the depression. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

My nickname is Victor in this house, but I cheer up uncontrollably when warm sun shines. Ken |

It was dry, powdery stuff that got into the air vents of the intercity 125's if i remember. Not the usual clumpy wet stuff we normally get... Known as Meldrew myself 'round these parts... ;o) Les -- Remove Frontal Lobes to reply direct. "Oh Bother!" said the Borg, "We've assimilated Pooh!" "That's 10 times I've explained binary to you. My nickname is Victor in this house, but I cheer up uncontrollably when warm sun shines. Ken Ken & Dave, Your comments support my ultimate preference for sun over warmth. In this country we don't get many prolonged spells of overcast gloomy weather, which I hate. Mean annual sun in the towns varies from about 39% of the possible to 59%, with average of about 49%. The relatively sunniest month on record was July 1952 at Blenheim (231 hrs of recordable C/S possible 273, or over 84%), and in December(!) one station once recorded only 60 hrs of a possible 450 [13.3%] - persistent cloudy onshore flow in an anticyclonic situation, plus some unsettled cloudy weather. The same site recorded 161 hrs of sunshine in the June of that year!! |
