Default Aberdeenshire snow

Current snow depth at Chapel Of Garioch (160M, 5 miles west of Inverurie)
9cm, lying snow for 4 days now, with some melting by day.

I have had to negotiate snow covered roads every morning this week, with the
main trunk road (A96) to Aberdeen snow covered during heavy showers on
Tuesday and Today ( took 1 1/2 hours to get to Aberdeen this morning).

Plenty of showers tonight so I wouldn't be surprised to wake up to another
5-8 cm by the morning.

Not much mention of snow in northern Scotland on the news, and barely
mentioned in the national forecast.

The degree of weather newsworthiness is inversely proportional to the
distance from London - any fule know that...

The world north of a line from the Mersey to the Wash is largely
inhabited by magical creatures and a clime of "Grate colde..." not
worthy of mention in todays media.

Och, aye, but aabody in London kens that northern Scotland is
aye under a three-foot deep blanket of snow from November to
March, so it's not newsworthy when there's only 9 cm lying.

Snowing here in Fochabers as I type this, BTW, and through the
snow there's sunshine lighting the front of the house across the
road, and blue sky beyond.

and then the skies cleard and it all froze. I have not seen such icy back
roads for a while. The car is entombed in an ice capsule and I am scared I
pull the door handle off trying to get in to turn it on !

Sheet of ice when I cam back through the Glens last night.
How come they can de-ice the Dramlich but not Foudland?

- The Glens are higher up than the Dramlachs so colder
- The Glens are shaded by the hill to the south so the sun
couldn't thaw the road
- The Dramlachs is open to the west so snow melts there more
readily
- It's a different local authority ... no, that won't wash, it's
a trunk road so it's not the local authority's responsibility.

I came down the Dramlachs yesterday in mid-afternoon and it was
clear of snow then, so there would have been nothing to freeze
when the temperature dropped after sunset.

It was not frozen until late on. Bear Scotland sub contract to
Aberdeenshire/Moray Council depending on which bit of the A96 is frozen.

Aberdeenshire/Bear had not gritted since 07:15 despite the forecast for more
snow/rain and freezing temps. The snow stopped early but still no gritting
and the road lends itself to run off causing problems - poor drainage/design.

Dramlach cleared by Moray/Bear is steeper so run off clears more easily (into
the High St?)! therefore not so susceptible to freezing (into the High St?)!

Sorry OT but as I drive it every day close to my heart as both councils know!

I wonder whether the contracts are identical?

I've noticed that myself on occasion.

I think it probably goes into the Burn rather than on to the
High Street, but it certainly clears more readily.

Well, at least there's not a problem on the roads today.

I doubt it. Moray seem to have their act together this year unlike last.
