Default Forecasts up the spout!

Hi Everyone,

Over the last few days all the forecasters have been banging on about a
'major snow event' wednesday night into thursday but nothing more after
that. The reality of the situation is that the wed/thurs snow turned out to
be a big disappointment for a lot of snow-loving people. Now here we are on
friday - a day described as a much quieter day just yesterday by the BBC -
and what's it doing - it's snowing like bilio !

I do realise that snow can be notoriously difficult to forecast accurately
but I'd be very interested to hear everyones thoughts about the last 2 days'
weather - especially the fact that todays snow was completely unforecast
just 24 hours ago - maybe the first front was just a decoy for today's
weather :-)

David

They were just about spot-on for me in Hertfordshire. I don't remember
them saying -9C for Tuesday night, but I got my dollop of snow.
According to a friend it stated at 04:20 Thursday morning, which was
right according to the last broadcast I watched at 10:30.

On Tuesday the BBC London area television warned of snow risk for
today.

I agree that timings and temperatures for thursday morning were bang on.
But what began as a well organised band of medium to heavy precipitation
fragmented and lost must of its potency as it crossed the country -
especially over wales. To quote Will Hand from one of his previous threads
on wednesday evening - "I think this frontal precip. band is going to break
up!" From my point of view here in Wrexham I think Will was spot on.

We had plenty of snow Weds/Thu night as forecast. Today we had some
light snow this morning and now it is raining. South Oxon.

I notice the metoffice issued a severe weather warning for Oxon/Bucks/W
Berkshire this morning for heavy snow. That hasn't materialised here.

.... and my post on Jan 30th looking even better, tempting Will into his
excellent forecast. Always looked a fringe snow situation.
"Well next week seems very unclear with all of the models struggling. A
week

ahead is always difficult but I think small changes in this instant could
mean very different weather. Cue Will. ;-)

They don't do forecasts for snow-loving people on the
grounds that they are very few in number and would be disappointed
anyway unless their houses were buried to the rafters. I thought the
forecast for Thursday morning was pretty good. One always has to
allow a little bit for hype and backside-covering.

I am getting concerned about flooding

I've had two days of heavy rain here in north devon, with some very
heavy rain/hail showers between the two bands

A glance at the latest sat image, shows a brief clear gap, and the
next band is well on it's way.
Already arrived in south-west Ireland

Wales has been dumped on with snow... when that begins to thaw, with
additional rain.
Maybe some more snow coming in... it will eventually melt... flooding
problems

Carol Kirkwood on News 24 yesterday afternoon said this current band of
rain would only affect southern areas and the south Midlands with the
leading edge getting some sleet or snow and most other areas would have
a quiet but still cold day, then on Saturday another band of rain would
spread from the south west and produce heavy snow in North Wales and the
Midlands that was the one I was interested in but as you say it's
happened today.

Snowing very heavily here and as been for some time.

Current temp 0.2c

Hi David,

Cloud head from small tight low off south Devon developed more than expected and
extended north further than expected into the cold air. Hence the snow. because
of northward extension it kept further west than expected. It is still going and
the snow area has increased in the past hour or so. Piling up now in the hills
of Wales with 30-40cm in places.

Meanwhile in Devon and Cornwall we got some really heavy unforecast rain from
the system. Here in Haytor my AWS says 30.0 mm, the manual gauge will be around
35mm at a guess when I read it. Flooding locally on low ground. This afternoon
temperature plummetted from 7C down to 2.5C as wind swung NNW'ly.

The *next* system threatens yet more snow for hills of Wales tomorrow. Gradually
getting milder though. Watch out for more changes to the forecast, it's a very
volatile set-up.

Block possibly returning next weekend, see my forecast later.

Will.

ISTR they said in would lose it's 'oomph'.
