Default Weather averages - data source?

Many of you post monthly data including 1971 to 2000 eLTA data.

Is this simply the nearest weather station on the Met Office web site,
or is there another source for this?

Where I live in NW Essex there is no nearby weather station. The four
nearest seem to be Cambridge, Wattisham, Greewich and Rothamsted. I'm
tempted to do some sort of geographical averaging but would like
advice from the group.

TIA

Jim, many of us are members of C.O.L. (Climatalogical Observers Link)
http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~brugge/col.html
and have been keeping records for many years (1977 I go back to), C.O.L.
has published and made any necessary adjustments for the missing years
(1971-1977) and this is the data sets that are used to give the eLTA
differences. It is difficult to compare with even any nearby stations,
certainly for rainfall, as there can be many local variations which may
be misleading if comparing with your own data.

If you have rainfall data going back 30 years you don't have a problem,
how far does your dataset go back?

Also the published C.O.L. data can be purchased which looking from my
list includes locations such as:

Loughton, Rettenden, Braintree, Little Waltham, Galleywood x2 , Earls
Colne, Great Maplestead (precipitation only), Benfleet, Colchester x2,
Epping, Royston, Bedford, Watford, Ricjmansworth, Borhamwood, Great
Gaddesden, Luton, Beccles, Wattisham, Mildenhall and Lowestoft to name a
few.

Jim

I think you will find that Andrewsfield (Stebbing) is the nearest to you,
not too far away and a similar setting. Somewhere in my PC I have a link to
pages of annual rainfall and temperature data for your neighbour Stansted in
the last few decades of the 20th Century. When I can find the link I'll send
it to you.
In the meantime why not have a look at the COL website where a number of us
send our data?

All the best

And if you e-mail me your exact location or grid reference I'll read off
your
annual rainfall from the official map. But bear in mind that if you have an
AWS you are almost certainly collecting less rain (by up to 15%) than
you would in a manual rain-gauge. It shouldn't be too difficult to estimate
monthly temperature and rainfall averages from this and from Stansted/
Andrewsfield (as George says) once you have, say, two years' worth of
data to compare with.

Keith,

Sorry for the delay in replying - seem to have been rather busy for
the last few weeks.

I will investigate COL again. The last time I looked the subscription
seemed a bit steep for a casual observer, but I see they offer an
electronic only delivery at a lower price.

My records are sporadic and date back to 1986. There have been periods
with no observations - absence overseas, broken rain gauge, etc.

Regards

Jim
