Default January 1979

As a somewhat "sad" climatologist, I have been researching the weather
in Coventry during the past 115 years for almost 30 years now.

We have now uploaded Excel files for each month back to 1978 on our
web site, though some of the early years contain sketchy detail in
places!

However, this morning I was looking at January 1979 - only 28 years
ago, but what a winter month that was!!

Here is the link for this file, just in case you want to have a look.

I must say, it didn't seem that unusual at that time!

Fascinating hobby this!!

I know what you mean Steve!

I've been keeping weather data since 1967 but have only had this
Automatic weather station for 12 years and I would love to put it
through a Winter like 1979 or even a month like January 1979 but sadly I
don't think it will ever happen.

Until 1979 my favourite Winter month was February 1969 which in itself
was a very cold and snowy month. However January 1979 just had the edge
with snow lying on all 31 days, regular heavy snowfalls, hard frosts and
lots of ice days, what more can you want from a Winter month!!

I must say walking in our country park yesterday really bought back
memories of past Winters it was the best snowfall in years.

Snow thawing quickly here now with patchy rain for much of the afternoon
and quite breezy.

Current temp 2.9c

Humidity 96%

Pressure 994.8mb
