Default Cold? What cold?

I think Alex Deakin is getting a bit ahead of himself. "Well there's
no doubt about it, Winter is definitely back..." he just said. Then...
"and another cold day tomorrow." OK, thinks I, I'd better check the
thermometer... I must have missed something. Hmmm... 8.5 deg C. Now
what was it at lunchtime, 11 or 12 if I remember rightly. Winter's
back? Really???

Made me chuckle. Maximum temperature of just shy of 14°C here - more
appropriate in April or May - a good 6 or 7degC above what you'd expect
I guess. Looking at
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/.../uk/guide.html indicates that
that would've been "exceptionally mild". "Cold" would mean something
around 2 or 3°C.
