uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

I've seen several threads on here about the mildness of the winter (DJF).
Forgive a naive question from a newcomer, but have there been areas of the UK which have had no air frost (so far) this winter? If so, would this be unusual? What about an entirely frost-free calendar year? Steve P |

I suspect exposed, coastal areas in the south and west of the UK would
experience the least frosts, and a completely frost-free year I would imagine is not that uncommon in such places. Also the islands around the UK such as the Scilly Isles and the Western Isles. ________________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Weatheronline's historical chart shows a minimum of +4C this winter at St Mary's, Scilly Is. |

Also the islands around the UK such as the Scilly Isles and the Western Isles. Correct, though not for Stornoway where the highest extreme winter minimum in the last 65 years is -2.0°C in 2002-03. Of the 270-odd sites I monitor, 32 recorded no air frost in January, including unexpected places like Stornoway, Bridlington and Cromer. Most, though, have had frosts in Nov, Dec, or Feb, and the only remaining frost-free sites are Mumbles, Scilly, Portland, St Catherine's Point, Torquay and Falmouth, and outside the UK at Rosslare and all stations in the Channel Islands (that, too, I think is rare). The lowest min so far at Scilly is 4.1°C. Stornoway's minimum so far is -1.6°C, so that record may go. Philip |

Vis-a-vis climate change, it seems to me (as a novice) that it's the "high minima" that are of more consequence from a day-to-day point of view than extremes of high or low temperature. As discussed elsewhere on the group, the effects of high minima on flora and fauna are very noticeable - particularly if, say, birds start nesting at times inappropriate to food supply for their chicks.
