This forecast represents the *PERSONAL OPINION* of the Chief forecaster at the
privately run Haytor meteorological office in Devon on how the weather may
unfold in Devon next week. The Chief forecaster will take no responsibility
whatsoever for any actions arising from its use. It is provided freely in the
spirit of freedom and the great love for meteorology that we personally enjoy
and wish to share freely with others.

Summary valid for Saturday 03/03/07 to Saturday 10/03/07
TOI (time of issue) Thursday 01/03/07 2100 UK local time

This forecast is for all areas in Devon south of the A30 as far west as the
Tamar and as far east as the Exe.

Headline summary:

High confidence that the week ahead will be changeable and mild with further
spells of heavy rain and a bit of sunshine.

Synoptic summary:

Still no let up in the unsettled weather as a sequence of fronts move across the
UK next week.

Detailed forecast:

After overnight rain clears away, Saturday looks like being mainly dry with
sunny spells. Perhaps a few light showers in the morning. Winds moderate and
mainly westerly. Temperatures 8-10C depending on altitude. Turning cloudy in the
evening with a freshening south or southeast wind bringing rain overnight into
Sunday.

Sunday promises to be windy and wet with strong to gale southerly winds swinging
southwesterly during the day. Lots of hill fog over the moors above 250m asl.
Mild with temperatures 9-12C. Turning drier and clearer in the evening as winds
turn westerly and ease down a bit, but still fresh to strong in exposed areas.

Monday should be a windy and showery day with sunny intervals. Fresh to strong
westerly winds easing later. Temperatures 8-11C depending on altitude.

Tuesday and Wednesday are difficult to call, but certainly some rain at times
and also some sunny spells. Winds fresh on Tuesday but easing on Wednesday,
mainly westerly. Temperatures 8-11C.

At the moment Thursday looks like being a fine and mainly dry day as a weak
ridge of high pressure comes across. Light winds and temperatures 8-11C but with
possibly some ground frost in the morning and later again in the evening.

Back to changeable weather for Friday and Saturday with moderate to fresh west
to northwest winds bringing spells of rain and showers and also some sunny
intervals. Turning colder on Saturday with showers turning wintry over Dartmoor
above 400m asl, mostly rain, hail and sleet, but possibly some snow in the
showers above 500m asl. Temperatures 7-10C on Friday falling to 5-9C on Saturday
depending on altitude.

288 mm rain in Haytor in February, over 200% of normal. However, Princetown had
344 mm and Ivybridge 244 mm so a very wet month in most places, ending a wet and
mild winter in our part of the world. No sign of any prolonged dry weather yet,
at least till the middle of March at the very earliest, so make good use of the
odd dry day when they come along, if you can.
