Default Today's model interpretation (20/08/03)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output, for noon (GMT) on Sunday. Issued
0610z, 20/08/03.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.html
A ridge covers the North Sea and much of the UK, with low pressure to the
WSW of Ireland. SE'lies and easterlies cover the UK as a result. The low
deepens and drifts eastwards at T+144, bringing SE'lies and ESE'lies over
the UK.By T+168 a trough from the low covers the Celtic Sea, while high
pressure extends from Greenland to Norway. Southern England and Wales lie
under SSW'lies, with strong easterlies further north.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
An easterly flow covers much of the UK, with high pressure to the north of
Scotland. The high builds to the south of Iceland at T+144, leading to
northerlies for Scotland and easterlies elsewhere.

GFS: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1081.gif
High pressure lies to the north, with easterlies and SE'lies over the UK.
The high builds slightly at T+120, with 850hPa temperatures ranging from +7C
over East Anglia to +11C over SW England. By T+144, the high builds and
drifts westwards, still with easterlies over the UK. The high drifts slowly
eastwards at T+168 and day 8, still with easterlies and SE'lies over the UK.
Not a great deal changes on day 9, as the high declines over the North Sea.
By day 10, the high drifts over central Europe, allowing southerlies to
cover the UK.

GEM: http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120_e.html
The Canadian run shows high pressure to the SE of Iceland, leading to
northerlies for Scotland and NE'lies or easterlies elsewhere. There's little
change from T+144 to day 8 as the high drifts slowly westwards, with
northerlies and easterlies still covering the UK by then. On day 9, the high
declines further to the south of Iceland, while a secondary high is located
to the west of Norway, leaving northerlies over the UK. Northerlies and
NW'lies cover the UK on day 10 as the Norweigan High declines.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
A ridge from the north covers the UK, with light winds for all. 850hPa
temperatures range from +10C to +11C over the British Isles.

Model overlay charts (GEM/GFS/JMA):
http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/da.../ens/pslv.html
The T+108 chart shows a ridge from the north over the UK.

In summary, the runs today continue to show high pressure to the north
influencing the UK, with easterlies being prevalent. This will mean settled
weather for most, but especially for Scotland.
