Default Today's model interpretation (12/03/07)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for 12z on Friday.
Issued 0555z, 12th March 2007.

The models show a change to cooler conditions in around a week, with
northerlies or NW'lies caused by the Azores High ridging northwards. There's
likely to be rain in all areas, with high ground in the north seeing wintry
precipitation.

A mixture of southerlies and SSW'lies covers the UK, with a trough moving
eastwards over the UK. The trough fills over the North Sea tomorrow, leaving
the UK under WSW'lies. Further WSW'lies affect Scotland and Northern Ireland
on Wednesday, with light winds elsewhere from a ridge. Thursday sees little
change, with England and Wales remaining under a ridge.

The jetstream chart shows a strong jet across the North Atlantic and a ridge
over the UK. At the 500hPa level a trough is approaching from the west,
while MetO has a flatter gradient. ECM also shows a relatively flat
gradient, with a ridge to the SW and a low to the north. NGP is vastly
different, showing a deep upper low to the north and a marked trough over
the UK. GEM shows a flat westerly gradient over the UK.
At the surface GFS brings SW'lies for all, with a trough to the west. ECM
and MetO both show westerlies with a ridge close to southern England
bringing lighter winds there. NGP shows westerlies and NW'lies as a trough
moves eastwards, while GEM brings WSW'lies for all with a ridge over the
English Channel.

Evolution to T+168
ECM brings a trough over Scandinavia as heights rise to the west. For the UK
that means WNW'lies on day 6 and NW'lies on day 7, with the Azores High
building to the SW.
GFS also shows a trough forming, but this time directly over the UK. Cold
westerlies cover the UK on day 6, followed by NNW'lies on day 7 as the
trough moves eastwards.

Looking further afield
ECM brings a spell of NW'lies and WNW'lies for the UK on days 8 to 10 as
high pressure to the west moves slowly eastwards.
GFS shwos northerlies for all on day 8, followed by low pressure atop Wales
on day 9. By then strong to gale force easterlies and NE'lies affect
Scotland and Northern Ireland. By day 10 the low moves southwards, leaving
the UK under a mixture of ENE'lies and NE'lies.

Ensemble analysis

night's 18z)
The ensembles show a cooler spell with some rain.
