How do you killfile a particular poster so that you don't need to read
anything that person says? I use Google Groups and can't see how to
do it. It would be useful.

Unfortunately there is no way of killfiling in Google Groups.

But you can set the default to show you who started the post and thus
avoid the thread. Unfortunately I forget how. I have Firefox set up
like that but IE just shows the last poster!

The drawback is that The threads are rearanged according to the last
poster in IE whilst older threads get buried in Firefox. Hence the
reason I am using two accounts.

Luckily I have the strength of character to avoid those posters I do
not wish to read. But usually there isn't anyone I should like to
avoid so that is OK.

I have heard there is a downloadable add on written by Google for
killfiling in their groups but I think it just refers to their
immitation usenet groups. Try one of their help groups.

Don't be silly. I wouldn't want anyone to suffer because my posts are
upsetting them. I always encourage such people to use a killfile on
me.

It's when they killfile me then come back and say silly things about
me that I get upset. I have no problems with the thin skinned leaving.

Who wants sheep with thin skins, for goodness sake?

Well, that's not entirely true actually...

If you're using Firefox 2.x, visit http://www.greasespot.net/ and
install the latest version of GreaseMonkey.

After restarting Firefox, visit http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html
and click on the 'Latest Google Groups KillFile Script' link, which
will prompt you load it into GreaseMonkey.

You will then get an either an [X] or 'Ignore User' link against every
poster's name in Google Groups, and a 'Killfile' link in the top
right-hand corner (for un-killfiling them , rather confusingly...).
You have to refresh the browser window initially to see the results,
but it does work. Beautifully

I am not sure that you can (via a web based reader).

News reading clients generally allow kill filing and it is usually simple to do.
They are generally 'better' for accessing Usenet in any event, assuming that you
have access to a news server (most people have). This may or may not be free of
charge.

I currently use Thunderbird wherein the process is called 'message filtering'.
Previously, I have used Free Agent, and various other readers, all of which
allowed kill files. I will even admit to using MS Mail and News (before the
invention of 'outlook' ... a horrid development imho).

Why bother? When you see who the author is simply ignore it,
just as I ignore a columnist (or whole section) I don't like in my
newspaper. What harm does it do, anyway, to read some rubbish?
Others may reply and you won't know what they're talking about. This
killfiling caper does sound all a bit princessy.

Before broadband, I think it - killfiling - allowed you to avoid paying
directly through dial-up to download items from posters identified as
undesirable. It still prevents some moments of irritation and wasted
time looking at stuff from people one would really rather not know
about.

Demon's Turnpike enables it, justified if for no other reason by
suppressing the voluminous postings of an individual apparently incensed
by the home-based security services in the UK.
