We have had no recordable rain here near Exeter, Devon this month. Anyone
else with this stat?

Not one drop of rain, recordable or otherwise, in Blackpool since March.

Not one drop? How could you possibly tell?

Clear skies all month, or high thin non-rain producing clouds. No evidence
anywhere of rain having fallen, ground, cars, water-butts etc, plus
http://blackpool.weather-watch.com/greatmarton.html concurs.

I must admit I've not been awake 24 hours a day, but "not one drop" pretty
much sums it up :-)

My last recorded rainfall (1mm) was on 31st March.

-------------------------------
This seems unusually widespread, especially for the time of year. None here
since March 30th and only 8mm since March 6th.

I think that long-term records suggest that this time of year is
actually the most likely to have a prolonged drought.

Did you miss all the snow and hail showers on the 29th March then Stan?

I was out in them that day on the moor where 3 inches snow was lying in places
and one or two seemed to be heading Plymouth way, perhaps they died out?

Will.

We had some rain here in Plympton, Plymouth last Saturday Night making it
quite sticky in the warm sunshine on Sunday.

On Monday although dry in Exeter and most of the Journey home I passed
through a shower which just was enough to wet the A38 between South Brent
and Ivybridge.

It was dry at home in Plympton though.

However this is the only rain I have seen since mid March. It was almost
like someone through a switch from the constant rain of the Winter once we
reached the Equinox.

It has also meant that I have not needed to cut the grass which is a normal
occurance here even throughout the Winter if there is a dry couple of days
to allow me to do it. The little growth from the grass is being kept under
control by moving the Guinea Pigs round the garden.

Last recordable rainfall here in the Otter Valley was the 22nd of March.
But
the last substantial rainfall, i.e., greater than 5 mm was on the 6th of
March.

I have never known the grass to turn brown in April but it is now!

Currently at 21:20, 10.7C, RH 60%, DP 3.3C, 1019.6 mb (S), Wind calm NNW,
12.4 hours of bright sunshine today.

Bit wetter in Haytor and grass is green and growing quickly. Soil dry on
top but
moist underneath.
Just 1.1 mm rain in April.
Last larger amount of "rain" was on 29th March when we collected 6.8 mm
but that
was from hail, sleet and snow showers!

Different world on Dartmoor just southwest of Exeter.

2150 Temp. 8.8C.

Would that be for individual localities John or nationwide at the same time,

AFAIK, it's nationwide.
The period February-May is generally accepted as the
driest of the year. The effect nay be more pronounced
in certain localities of course. It's something to do with
the weakening of the Atlantic Westerlies, so I believe.

Pretty much nationwide, I think. "Blocking" seems to be most frequent at
this time of year, and if the block is in the right place that can mean
a prolonged dry spell.

Philip Eden's piece in today's Telegraph has some info on recent
droughts that occurred at this time of the year.

We think we've got it bad here, I've just come off the phone from my
sister who is on holiday on the Greek island of Evia and the locals/
family there are saying they have not had any appreciable rain since
January.

This is very bad news for them, and they are getting worried, because
March through to May is their wet season

But such blocks *normally* involve cooler-than-normal weather, whereas
this time we could be heading for record average maxima figures!

I'm currently averaging 18.2C, 4.8C above average. That's even 1C above
the *May* average!
