uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Is there any way to "class" different months based on e.g. mean
temperature and precipitation, so you can put it into a certain category, resulting something like: January CET: below: 2°: Chilly 1°: Cold 0°: Unusually cold -1°: Very cold -2°: Extremely cold -3°: Severe -4°: Exceptional (Or any synonym of "very very cold" you could find, sorry if I've might have stolen the examples subconsiously...) It would be quite interesting, especially with some of the more exceptional months... Anyone here who likes the idea? |

(I would have thought that 'Extremely' would have to be 'worse' than 'Severe'.) A month can be above or below 'average' but not 'abnormal'. When I think of it again, my idea wasn't too good, I meant more of a "how rare is this month"-classification, but all I need for that is probably just some kind of probability calculator, which means this topic was kind of useless. -- Gianna http://www.buchan-meteo.org.uk * * * * * * * But anyway, best regards /McLoaf |

In its monthly summaries the Belgian Royal Meteorological Institute uses the following terms to describe the key statistics of the month - average temperatures, rainfall total, average air pressure, etc. normal - likely to occur at least once in 5 years unusual - likely to occur once in 6 years very unusual - likely to occur once in 10 years exceptional - likely to occcur once in 30 years very exceptional - likely to occur once in 100 years Colin Youngs Brussels |
