uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Not recording rainfall at all. I know it's not rained since 22 March, but my
standard gauge has recorded a little for the last 3 days. Have experimented with trickling some water in, but nothing! Any helpers out there who can provide a clear non-technical solution? Thanks in advance. -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |

I assume it's a tipping bucket gauge like my WMII, unless you have a connection problem or break in the wire it may need it's reed switch replacing. You can pick these up quite cheaply from RS Component's. I have a couple of spares and the RS Part No. is 229-3670 http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/rswww/se...cape&Nr=avl:uk If you want advice on how to replace it, please ask, you will need a soldering iron. It took me about 3 attempts as I'm a bit of a fumble fingers, but if I can do it, anyone can :-) I hope this helps. -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net e-mail: kreh at southendweather dot net |

You should check that the spiders haven't set up camp in your tipping buckets and welded them down. -- Jonathan Stott Canterbury Weather: http://www.canterburyweather.co.uk/ Reverse my e-mail address to reply by e-mail |

My tipping bucket rain gauge stopped working a while back and I found out it
was the reed switch that had failed. As Keith of Southend says, they are cheap but slightly fiddly to replace though nothing complicated. Plenty of info out there in Googleland about replacing magnetic reed switches. ________________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Any helpers out there who can provide a clear non-technical solution? You need to remove the black funnel (twist it anti-clockwise) and check that the bucket is free to tip. You should be able to easily operate the bucket by hand and it should record .01" or 0.25 mm (approx) for each tip. Spider web will prevent it tipping... an open circuit microswitch, or cable, will prevent it from recording. You should be able to jump the microswitch with a short length of conductor to verify the location of any open circuit. -- John H |
