Was down at Solent again today between 1600BST and 1900BST and checked the shade temperature in an area upto half a mile inland and at both ends of the town. I found that it was 23C (rounded) in the entire area as I arrived at 1600, falling below 22.5 between 1630 and 1700 and below 22 at around 1730. Using the same thermometer and method, the temperature at home 5 miles inland was 22 deg C (rounded) as I set off at 1545 and this was the day's maximum here so yet again, it was a degree lower here than on the coast. With a brisk nor'easter, today's session was much easier than yesterday and what I recorded is consistent with the reported max of 23.3C at Solent MRSC which probably occurred very close to 1600 BST. The Hurn figures are also supportive, for a change. I think any Stevenson screen effect today would have been insignificant because of the brisk wind. I'm not going to do this every day but it's been a darned good excuse to get down to the beach while it's been "July in April!" ![]() -- Dave Fareham (West) |

Now that the resorts have gone, there's nothing immediately available between Thorney Island and Hurn since Solent and NOC are inappropriate sites for measuring rain. Thorney Island reported none at all in April, Hurn ~5mm, but these days you can never be sure whether the tipping-bucket mechanism is working or not during periods with only small amounts of rain. Nigel's figure at Romsey should be interesting too. Philip |

Nigel's figure at Romsey should be interesting too. Yes I do Philip and I recorded only 3.0 mm here for April but it is a home made and self-calibrated guage in a smallish back garden. There was 0.5mm on the 24th and 2.5 mm on the 26th (the latter from a sharp shower or two). I'd have thought Thorney would have had something on the 24th (light rain and drizzle) but the 26th would have been more of a hit-and-miss affair. I hope they are still recording rainfall at Thorney, there are few enough rainfall recording sites in my part of the World, though the EA must have a few in South Hants. -- Dave Fareham (West) |

So this month at least the Bmth figure appears accurate. (Ex Meto Standard Raingauge) Best Rgds Paul |

(Ex Meto Standard Raingauge) Best Rgds Paul I appear to be in the relative dry spot in Romsey with a grand total of 1.3mm for April 2007... but not as arid as Wootton, Isle of Wight coming in at 0.7mm (lowest for any month since I started the records there way back on 1 January 1974). (Lurching wildly off-topic ...) Nigel, assuming you actually lived in Wootton in the 1970s, did you know Adrian Scadding, Lt-Cdr, RN, ret.? He spent some years of his retirement commuting to Aberdeen to do night shifts at Imcos Marine's office there. Lovely chap. Not sure whether NL knew him ... I think he'd left by the time Norman moved into the London office. Philip |

Peered down a well at Winterbourne Houghton this afternoon: levels were not far off the top a month or so ago - now only about a foot left in it, a fall of some 6ft R |

S. who lived in Binstead and kept the records for Ryde, and R. Kenneth Pilsbury of Totland, who shot the most wonderful photographs of clouds. His home was 'decorated' with them. Swerving back on topic: unbroken sunshine in Romsey today; wind ENE F5; max temp 21.8C. Nigel. |
