From the Tuesday of this week I will be on holiday right in the
far NW of Scotland. I know that the weather up here can be awful but I think I am right in saying that this is about the best time of year to go when the Atlantic is at it's weakest and before the more changeable weaterlies July/August set it. Any early thoughts/guesses as to conditions up there then? I think I need high pressure in exactly the right position and the GFS is my dream model at the moment and I believe it completely ![]() I don't think I could imagine better looking charts for that part of the world! -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

Col, As a taster you might like to look at the following webcams from time to time http://www.camvista.com/scotland/sce...onancastle.php http://www.camvista.com/scotland/scenic/skye.php3 http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/smo/dealbha...in/english.php May/June is often the best time in the NW but if you get any sort of northerly it can get pretty cold. Given the right situation fresh snow can be seen on the mountains. Norman. (delete "thisbit" twice to e-mail) -- Norman Lynagh Weather Consultancy Chalfont St Giles 85m a.s.l. England |

However I will be going a lot further north than Skye. It's on that little strech of north-facing coastline which is about the same latitude as Stornoway. So pretty remote, I doubt my mobile phone will work, do they even have television up there ![]() I take you point about the northerlies. I was wondering how cold it could be in certain conditions, the sea will still be pretty cold and there ain't much between there and the arctic. So pack the shorts along with a winter coat basically. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

There's been a lot of fine and sunny weather up there in the past few weeks. It's so dependent on wind direction. Norman. However I will be going a lot further north than Skye. It's on that little strech of north-facing coastline which is about the same latitude as Stornoway. Sounds like you must be going somewhere near Lochinver. The coast roads which run from Scourie to Kylesku to Lochinver to Achiltibuie is indescribably beautiful. There is nowhere in Britain to match it. It isn't always low cloud and mist. If you're lucky you'll enjoy fantastic views and you'll have wonderful beaches all to yourself. I can vouch for mobile phones not working! Two summers ago we somehow, and I still don't know how, locked ourselves out of our car on the stretch of road from Kylesku to Clashmore. There was absolutely no signal from the mobile, but after 20 minutes a car heading west stopped and the driver promised he would phone the RAC for us when he found a phone box. An hour later the driver of a camper van coming the other way stopped to tell us that he had a message for us from the driver we had spoken to earlier to say that he had found a call box and that RAC had been contacted and was on its way!!! |

I have of NW Scotland, low cloud and mist! It's not always like that - it was fine and sunny yesterday although there was new snow on the tops. However I will be going a lot further north than Skye. It's on that little strech of north-facing coastline which is about the same latitude as Stornoway. So pretty remote, I doubt my mobile phone will work, One of the benefits of being in N-W Sutherland - you can't be got at there! However I can vouch for the fact that phobiles do work in some places - I've had a call every evening this week from someone who is at a conference in Ullapool. do they even have television up there ![]() Yes, but who needs TV? I take you point about the northerlies. I was wondering how cold it could be in certain conditions, the sea will still be pretty cold and there ain't much between there and the arctic. So pack the shorts along with a winter coat basically. Good advice. But warm *and* waterproof would be better! And don't forget the suntan cream and sunglasses. Anne |

As a Welshman, I have to swallow my pride and say that Wester Ross and
further north is the most beautiful scenery in Britain. Full stop. I have been three times in May and been so lucky with weather, but have had driving snow showers on Ben Alligan We have it penciled in for next May. next week the Pemb Coast Path and pressure seems to rising JT |

So pretty remote, I doubt my mobile phone will work, do they even have television up there ![]() I first visited that area in the early 70s and have had many holidays there. One late June I had a week of cold, drizzly weather which culminated in snow above about 600 metres followed by a week of very hot, blazing blue sky. The most recent visit was last Christmas, to Reiff, overlooking the Summer Isles. We had mobile 'phone coverage and television has been available for over thirty years. A lot of places now have satellite or Freeview. If you need more detailed info., e-mail me. -- Alan White Mozilla Firefox and Forte Agent.
