Because the MP complaining about it has told the BBC that "traditional barometers" will be banned, and the relevant person at the BBC has not done any proper research but simply decided "Ah! 'Traditional barometer' must be like the one my aunt has on her wall". Since aneroid barometers are much more familiar to most people, said BBC person has decided that must be what is meant... -- Bewdley, Worcs. ~90m asl. |

No, you won't (easily) be able to buy a new mercury barometer, but you will still be able to get old ones repaired. It's a mountain out of a molehill really. See Euromyths for more info: http://ec.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/pr...myth150_en.htm --------------------- Thank you for the link Darren. I get fed up with people saying "now the EU have banned.... " this and that when they patently haven't. Then we end up keeping the blatantly ridiculous pounds and ounces. Bring back pounds, shilling and pence, I say! Dave Bring in the Euro, then I won't get constantly ripped off every time I go into Eurozone by the Banks and the City! -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net e-mail: kreh at southendweather dot net |

oups.com... I strongly suspect that if you had a mercury barometer and the tube broke and all the mercury fell on the floor and you left it there you would not be in any danger whatever. I certainly hope not, as I remember someone broke a mercury thermometer in the chemistry classroom at my old school - and the fascinating, tiny, mercury globules lay there for quite some time before the teacher found out. I seem to remember someone trying to pick some up (to get rid of the evidence) and ending up with just a grey smear on their fingers for their troubles. That was in the early 90s, with a chemistry teacher who was just about to retire. He certainly wasn't one of the "health and safety" brigade! |
