uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Modeling European Windstorms

European windstorms are different from hurricanes in that they then to
occur in clusters. Does anyone know how to use (modify) a Poisson
process to model frequency / severity of European windstorms.

Extra-tropical cyclones: severe cyclonic storm that tracks across the
North Atlantic towards northwestern Europe in the winter months.

However, I'm not looking to do anything very complicated.....just want
to have a simple model (maybe non-homogenous Poisson) which reflects
the fact that these storms tend to occur in clusters.

There is an archive of sea level pressure maps on WetterZentrale.
It's a pain in the bum to read. It could do with a batch file or
whatever they call them to open a set of them -say a weeks worth, at a
time.

No link, sorry. If I could read German I'd be there now.
They also do a DVD of upper atmosphere stuff. I wonder if they do one
for the sea levels.
