Here is a summary of the latest NWP output, for noon (GMT) on Monday. Issued
0605z, 21/08/03. ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.html A ridge from the Greenland High extends SE'wards over Iceland and the UK, bringing northerlies and NE'lies across much of the UK. The ridge builds to the NW of the UK at T+144, with moderate northerlies and NNE'lies for all. The winds continue at T+168 as the high sinks southwards to the west of the UK. MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html The UK lies under high pressure, with light winds for all. The high persists at T+144, with little change in conditions over the UK. GFS: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1081.gif Light easterlies cover the UK, with high pressure to the NW. There's little change at T+120, with 850hPa temperatures ranging from +7C over East Anglia to +13C over SW England. The high builds over the UK at T+144, with light winds for most. By T+168, the high moves SE'wards and declines, leaving light southerlies and westerlies over the UK. Low pressure then dominates the UK on day 8, with SW'lies over England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Scotland lies under easterlies. The low moves NE'wards over southern Norway on day 8, with NNW'lies over much of the UK. Southern and SE England lie under WSW'lies, though, as is the case on day 10 as the next low moves closer to the UK from the west. GEM: http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120_e.html The Canadian run shows high pressure to the NW, leading to easterlies over much of the UK. The eastern half of the high sinks southwards over the British Isles at T+144, with light winds for all. The high declines over the UK at T+168, before southerlies ahead of a low move over Ireland on day 8. The low covers Ireland on day 9, with moderate southerlies over much of England and Wales; Scotland lies under easterlies. By day 10 the low moves away to the east, allowing moderate northerlies and NE'lies to affect the UK. JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html As with the other runs, a large high lies to the NW of the UK, this time bringing light NNW'lies for Scotland and Northern Ireland, with ENE'lies elsewhere. 850hPa temperatures range from +8C over northern Scotland to +13C over SW England. Model overlay charts (GEM/GFS/JMA): http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/da.../ens/pslv.html The T+108 chart shows a ridge over the UK, with low pressure well to the WSW. In summary, the runs today persist in showing a largely settled start to the week, with high pressure dominating the UK. There are difference between the runs, though, with winds forecast to be from the north or NE (ECM), east (Canadian) or light and variable (GFS, MetO). As ever, more runs are needed. |
