The line has been open (in preservation) for several decades now,
so for there to be "unprecedented" damage from landslips and
flooding shows how severe last night's conditions were around here
and a little to the north. No photos, unfortunately.
Has I'm a member of the SVR, there as been much damage, 4 complete
washout, track left in mid air, 3 partial washouts - embankments
wash away, and 3 fill-ins of cuttings.

It's not surprising, when the rock bed is soft sand, and the track
that runs through Highley is on slack from the old coal mines.

It will take about two to three months before it's fully
operational. --

As a fellow steam nutter, and one easily old enough to
remember when they did it for real, I'd say that's very bad luck.
I've been on the SVR - it's a good line. I'm a member of the
Bluebell, for what it's worth.

Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey.

Ever been down on the West Somerset Railway?

I've visited Minehead, again like the bluebell, it's only feasible to
get there when on holiday in the region, as I don't have a car. The
rail fares make traveling very expensive !

The WSR is now linked to the main line in Taunton, so on special occasions
you can travel all the way from London to Minehead like the good 'ole days!

Which means, of course, that services will be disrupted all through the
school holidays. Most bad luck.

Only on those special occasions, though. I don't drive, and it's
frustrating (though not the WSR's fault) that the line isn't really
accessible to passengers arriving on the main line at Taunton. The SVR has
the advantage of a very simple transfer, which I'm sure helps them a lot.

Now tell him how to pronounce Froncysyllte, Llanerchymedd and
Dwygyfylchi. And Machynlleth and Talerddig, since they have railway
interest. I know your area well, as my Dad was from Glyceiriog and
I can speak fairly bad Welsh even though my English speech is quite
London.

True, I know there are plans to run a service to Bristol 2 or 3 times a week
but I suspect cost will be a major factor....

The good news is they're investing a lot of money to make the services
better and better, new track being laid and a turntable planned for
Minehead.
