Default Poor June,Poor July

Naturally the locals round here in deep Dorset are shaking their heads
and trying to remember when the last time June followed by July were
disappointing.

And if someone might reach for their records etc, when was the last
generally disappointing summer - thus adding August to June and July!

Are Dorset folk usually gloomy and pessimistic Robin?

I have only been here a year. The village had a serious problem with
flies for the first two months (the weather was to blame), then we had
all the floods ( just after Christmas), then my septic tank had issues
and upset the two houses downhill (as it were). After that gales gave
24 hours of power cuts and the tree surgeon has been doing work ever
since. They still mention the bus that stalled in a flood round the
corner. It all happens he the typical village where the gaffers sit
on a seat and watch the world go by for an hour in the afternoon.

Not gloomy nor pessimistic, but certainly a lot of head scratchin'
going on about this weather. The annual flower show is concentrating
their thoughts I think

I think it was 1998. Don't think you can write off July just yet,
though! :-)

I'd say 1998 for June/July, and 1987 for Jun/Jul/Aug. There was
a decent fortnight in the first half of July, but that was all.

I don't think August 1987 was bad everywhere. In West Sussex I have
distinct memories of it being mostly warm and sunny after about the
first week, except for a thundery spell around the 20th.

Yes, you are right. Aug 1987 was dry along the south coast from
West Sussex to Cornwall, and also in other parts of the
West Country and south Wales, with normal temps and normal
sunshine. It was a wet and dull month, though, over most other regions
and parts of East Anglia and Kent had 100mm of rain in all three
summer months. Shows (quite understandably) how one's memory
is informed by one's own local experience rather than by a broad
climatological view.

Philip
