The running CET for August up to today is, by my calculation, 19.3ºC,
which is now significantly below the 19.6ºC which was needed to put this summer (J,J,A) on a par with summer 1976. It would need a mean of about 20ºC for the rest of the month (i.e. mean min 14, mean max 26, say) to get back in the running. Of course, we shouldn't forget that, however high this summer comes in the temperature rankings, it won't be among the driest or the sunniest, averaged nationally. Having said that, though, the August rainfall and sunshine figures are likely to be quite interesting. E&W Rainfall stands at 5mm (6%) and sunshine at 177 hours (100%) after 21 days. Philip Eden |

![]() You may be surprised to find a similar situation, even in London and the South East corner. Does anyone have comparative station data for that area? -- Dave Fareham (West) Well for Bedford, about 50 miles N of London Warmest is August 1997 at 20.4 (also warmest month since at least 1980), this month is now at 20.4 also and on the way down. So Aug 97 prob safe. Aug 97 also saw 15 days in a row over 26.7C(80F) we only managed 11 in a row this year. |

The mean temperature for August is currently 16.7°C for this site, now only 1.7°C above the average. Both August 1995 and 1997 finished with higher means (17.5°C and 17.1°C). I'd expect the final mark to remain much the same judging by the forecast. The summer as a whole (JJA) stands at 15.6°C, which is on a par with the summer of 2000 (very good up here). But a long way behind 1995's record of 16.4°C. Alex. Motherwell, Scotland. |

Philip Eden The mean temperature for August so far here in Basildon stands at 21.73C this should lift slightly assuming we have a warm weekend and nothing much cooler before the end of the month.
