At last.

The board was getting decidedly American. Let's hope normal service
will be resumed as soon as possible.

If you Google "cricket rain" you get 2,210,000 hits !

Possibly an interesting study there - the statistical correlation
between cricket and rainfall.

Philip Eden did a piece for Wisden (Almanack) a few years ago - I have it
somewhere. Perhaps he will remind us which year, and he may have some
interesting more recent data.

It was the big millennial edition (2000), and is updated every year. But I
didn't count all the days lost to rain! I'm 99.9% certain that that sort of
data is not readily available anywhere. I mentioned the appalling Mays of
1967 and 1979 in that article, and I had to systematically go through all
the match reports and count up the lost days (it took about two hours to do
two months, so it would need a very devoted researcher with a great deal of
time to do every month of every season.

I reckon we are on course to register the lowest Wisden Summer Index since
1954 (although 1968 and 1987) aren't far ahead, but only if August continues
the poor weather we've had so far.

Philip

Note to self: Read thread properly before posting!!

Sorry - that thread relates to Test cricket only. Just realised you were
referring to County cricket.

Jim.

This reminds me that in June 1954 I had tickets for the first 3 days of
the first ever Lord's Test

between England and Pakistan. It rained every day and I didn't see a ball
bowled.
All I saw was some of the England players ( Len Hutton, Denis Compton,
Alec Bedser etc walking across the pitch with umbrellas).
One newspaper referred to Lord's as
'looking like a beach with the tide out'. There was no money returned if
there was noplay
in those days.

A piece in the Independent today mentions 1912 as "the wettest, dullest and
coldest season of the 20th century". See

Much of which is "borrowed" from the Wisden 2000 article.
The least he could have done was a namecheck ...!
