Default [OT]Queensland rains - *ping* Blair Trewin

August is supposed to be the middle of the dry season along
the Sunshine Coast ... but there appears to have been
714mm in 24h (859mm in 60h) at a place called Rainbow
Beach on Thursday 23rd August.

I have a vague recollection of reading of even greater amounts
of rain in the region in a MetMag from the 1880s or 1890s,
but I'm sure it was in the mountains rather than on the coast,
and I can't remember the time of year.

Press reports this time talk about a once-in-100yr depression
off the Queensland coast, whatever that means in the context
of winter synoptics in the region.

If Blair is reading this, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd
be grateful if he could give us a bit of background.

Philip

I have been very lucky in that I have been to that part of Queensland a few
times. On a normally sunny day it is a fantastic drive all the way along
Rainbow Beach (also noted for its camel treks) from Noosa finally arriving
at the bay where you cross to Fraser Island. I thought rainfall was
generally low, not getting to those amounts until you get up north of
Daintree and Port Douglas, so it is pretty unusual.. There are marker posts
there on side of the Bruce Highway showing the depth of previous
floodwaters - several metres high.
