Dropped to 4.0C last night, my coldest Sept night on record (since
1991) It was completely calm for a while in the early hours. Somewhat surprisingly, my 5 coldest September nights have all been quite recent. 27/2007 4.0 24/2003 4.8 17/2005 6.1 29/2003 6.5 27/2003 6.8 No other September night has fallen below 7C Graham Penzance |

It was completely calm for a while in the early hours. Blimey Graham, that is a tad on the chilly side for your location. Interesting that your coldest September nights have all been in the last few years, any ideas on why that would be? My only thought is the possibility that the last few Septembers have been more settled than the previous ones. It was chilly here too, easily the coldest night of September this year (and last year) with a minimum of 5.2C at at 07:30 this morning. A lovely, 'fresh' sunny morning. Currently at 09:45, 8.7C, RH 80%, DP 5.2C, 1023.5 mb (R), Wind 9 mph NNE, 2.7 hours of sunshine so far today. ________________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Nick, Yes, I was really surprised when I saw the minimum, but the wind did go completely calm for a while, and it was very clear. The majority of Octobers (10 out of the last 15) don't see temperatures that low. It's risen very rapidly now, as much do to the breeze setting in as the sun, up to 12C by 10:10BST. The only really comparable September min was 24/2003 (14.8) and it was another quiet late September speIl. In 1995 there was a northerly wind on 18th-20th, but the mins were 13/14/10.5 respectively, and the max each day close to 20C. The air clearly didn't originate far to the north. Graham Penzance |

Perfectly clear skies with a full moon and the car thermometer never rose above 4șC. At one period the frost warning was flashing at me. -- MCC |

Minimum overnight low in Teignmouth, Devon was 5.8c (tropical) The coldest ever September night I can ever remember was circa 2c or 3c in 1986, when I was doing a school project on Teignmouth's weather as part of my 'O' Levels (GCSE). The following January (around 12/01/1987) I remember Teignmouth Met Station recording an overnight low of minus 9c, followed by a day maximum of only minus 3c. Will we ever see temperatures like that again on the English Riviera? |
