Oh dear, I just saw a graphic simulation of the storm with an eye like a

For me living in South Devon, the Burn's Day Storm of 25th Jan 1990
was for severe. In 1987 Teignmouth was just North of the strongest winds. Here's some comparisons. 1987 Storm (Exeter) http://www.tutiempo.net/clima/Exeter...1987/38390.htm http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive...0119871016.gif Maximum Sustained Velocity = 48.2 (km/h) Maximum Gust = 101.9 (km/h) 1990 Storm (Exeter) http://www.tutiempo.net/clima/Exeter...1990/38390.htm http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive...0119900125.gif Maximum Sustained Velocity = 81.3 (km/h) Maximum Gust = 137 (km/h) |

The eye passed directly over the isle of Wight, later hit London head on, and then moved north to the Wash. The swirl was impressive - and four times larger than a hurricane the narrator said in the opening title. I always thought the depression had a track approximately Exmouth, Bridgewater, across to the East Midlands and then continuing north east. r |

Heavens for Betsy, not more TV lies? The swirl was impressive - and four times larger than a hurricane the narrator said in the opening title. I thought that came from the blonde author doing the pseudo scientific stuff. She said something else that instantly rang the "wrong" bell but can't remember what it was. What ever even the '87 storm was a little kitten compared to a real Hurricane. The key bit is that over here gust speeds are reported rather than the sustained speeds of an Atlantic hurricane. I had nothing better to do so stuck with it but wasn't overly impressed. WTF the pregnant woman *had* to go to hospital is beyond me. If the Dr's had any worries about her they have had her in days before. Giving birth, in the vast majority of cases, is not life threating. We wouldn't be here if it was FFS!. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

The amount of damage looked a lot worse than some of the Florida hurricanes I have seen reported. Perhaps they don't have over a million trees to wipe out! The blonde Dr. was the only person I thought who had an agenda and was prone to say some stupid things but the people on it who were there had similar experiences to me that night, just a bit worse. Was this the story billed as "Britain's Worst Storm"? If so, I am surprised anyone on here watched it. Even you. The blonde Dr. was the only person I thought who had an agenda and was prone to say some stupid things but the people on it who were there had similar experiences to me that night, just a bit worse. Was this Doctored news-upping or just an unfortunate winner DecandAnted because no passing taxi drivers were available? Whatever X factor was involved, I can't see things improving with the Blue-Peter School of Journalism opening its doors to the wide world with a pool of in house resources to flush onto an eager public. |

Dave, S.Essex I found her a bit patronising, as though we were only 6 years old, perhaps it was aimed at the readers of the Daily Express :-) -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net e-mail: kreh at southendweather dot net |

I made a similar vow a few years ago never to watch TV weather forecasts ever again but occasionally find myself tempted :-) I have kept my vow not to watch things like "STORM" and GW programmes though - I have to keep my blood pressure down - LOL. Reading the proper science on the InterNet and in the literature is plenty good enough for me! Will -- |
