Default Today's model interpretation (24/10/07)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for 12z on Sunday.
Issued 0526z, 24th October 2007

By the beginning of next week unsettled weather will affect the whole of the
UK, with low pressure to the north and gusty WSW'lies or SW'lies for most.
The pattern looks like becoming zonal and thus very changeable, with further
rain throughout the week.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS
http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn001.png
High pressure lies to the ENE, with a ridge over the North Sea and the UK.
Winds are ENE'lies over England and Wales, with southerlies elsewhere.
There's little change tomorrow, but by Friday a trough approaches from the
west, bringing southerlies over Scotland and Northern Ireland. Elsewhere
winds remain light due to a ridge. On Saturday SSW'lies cover the UK as the
trough dissipates.

The jetstream chart shows a strong zonal jet over the North Atlantic, with a
trough over Ireland. At the 500hPa level there's also a trough over the UK,
with upper SW'lies over the UK. MetO also shows an upper trough over the UK,
while ECM's trough is slightly further west. GEM and NGP both show a trough
over the UK too.
At the surface GFS brings a trough over England and Wales, with SSW'lies in
advance and westerlies following behind. MetO shows SW'lies for all with a
trough over the Irish Sea. ECM also shows SW'lies, as do NGP and GEM.

Evolution to T+168
ECM shows WSW'lies for all on day 6, as a low moves eastwards to the north.
The winds become westerlies on day 7 as the low fills to the NE.
GFS brings westerlies on day 6 as the trough moves away to the eastwards.
WSW'lies move over the UK on day 7 in association with a weak ridge.

Looking further afield
The ECM shows SW'lies on day 8 as pressure builds over Biscay. The winds
become SSW'lies on day 9 as the high moves over France and the Alps. On day
10 high pressure extends from the Azores to the Alps, with a ridge over
Ireland. NW'lies cover the UK as a result.
GFS on day 8 brings SW'lies for all, with a small low to the north. A
transitory ridge brings light winds on day 9, before further SW'lies arrive
in association with another trough.

Ensemble analysis
(http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/da...ia/ensdia.html - last
night's 18z)
The ensembles for London show an unsettled and cool spell (aloft).

Blue skies, autumn colours, beautiful sunsets no wind... more please.

Zonal/changeable inherently damp windy atlantic weather is the worst aspect
of living in the UK

Well if theres a change now to unsettled theme, which has been most of the
summer if not all of it, then the next change to settled conditions, these
things seem to run on for months, then like Jan Feb time will very well be
the worst EasterlyWinter for Britain for years! So its all tying in.

My feelings exactly.

Although I just looked at this again and thought you'd "I only like
unstable weather when its setting records...", which is what I thought
I agreed with. But then I reflected and agreed with what you actually
said as well, if you see what I mean.

I've been thinking about watering some of the garden, which is
ridiculous for east Scotland in October.

Today in Dundee, however, we've had dense and persistent fog. That's
very rare here. Makes me feel like I'm back in Coventry again. Oh the
nostalgia ...

Not sure if it's been like that everywhere though... in addition to
being very dry it's generally been very dull too in Southampton at
least, excepting the 17th-23rd.
