Default I bet the BBC wishes it had a Time Machine.

Talking about putting back the clocks, I bet there are more than a few
red faced politicians in the Beeb who wish they could efface the
cacca:

Q: Now, when you say a smoking gun, what exactly do you mean?

Mark Taylor: Well, the -- (laughter) -- the thing is, the iPlayer is
not what it claimed to be, it is built top-to-bottom on a Microsoft-
only stack, the BBC management team who are responsible for the
iPlayer are a checklist of senior employees from Microsoft who were
involved with Windows Media. A gentleman called Erik Huggers who's
responsible for the iPlayer project in the BBC, his immediately
previous job was director at Microsoft for Europe, Middle East &
Africa responsible for Windows Media. He presided over the division of
Windows Media when it was the subject of the European Commission's
antitrust case. He was the senior director responsible. He's now shown
up responsible for the iPlayer project.

Q: Now, when the BBC chose Microsoft, they must have known, I mean,
how could they have made a choice that was so obviously discriminatory
to other platforms?

Mark Taylor: Well, it's an excellent question. One would assume that
they would know that as well. Unfortunately, it's not a question that
we've found anyone who's been able to answer so far. And we've done a
trail from OFCOM to the BBC Trust, and we're meeting up with the BBC
management on the 24th, and we're very curious to have that question
answered. So as soon as we know, we will tell you.

Anyone know offhand if the BBC weather graphics is Microsoft based?
There is something oddly familiar with its BSOD-like appearance.

But the ITV use something very similar so I wouldn't be surprised if
they got it from the MetO.

M$ machinations couldn't go THAT deep could they? I thought that the
writers were NZ based. But of course offshoring to the nether regions
would be a cute trick to hide the origins of something from the
Dungeon Dementias.

Hi,

I did wonder where this post was leading, didn't at first appear to be
weather related at all, but then nothing much is or is it?

It's about heads not rolling. Or more accurately... the wrong heads
rolling

Pretty much all my early stuff was based on what I garnered from the
BBC. Then for no reason I could see, they SNAFUed it. I had to get a
TV to play catch up. At least I got to see the Atlantic weather chart.

Now I have moved on and it's time for recriminations:

Q: There's talk about selling one of the production sites, combining
television and radio teams, redundancy, et cetera. Now I saw a number
-- I don't know if it's accurate or not -- that said that there were
£130 million pounds spent to develop the Windows-only iPlayer over the
past four years. [PJ: Times Online confirms the figure.]

Mark Taylor: Yes.

Q: I mean, how do they justify not using faster and cheaper standards-
based free open source software instead?

Mark Taylor:

Again, it's one of the questions that we have not found anyone able to
answer so far.

If you consider what could be done for a free software solution to
this, a one-time once-and-for-all open standards based free software
solution to it, if you consider what could be done for £130 million
pounds, that's remarkable.

Picking up on some of the points you made, absolutely true, part of
the wider controversy surrounding the BBC -- and I'd like to point out
that the trust in the BBC brand is at an all-time low, not just
because of iPlayer but because of multiple controversies in the area
of integrity at the moment.

I was reading in the Financial Times a couple of days ago that they're
selling one of their prime locations in central London, one of the
sort of landmark BBC sites, and the estimation of its value is between
£100 and £200 million. Now, the iPlayer has cost them one of their
landmark head offices.

Note the term:
"free open source software." That's free, as in free beer.

I strongly object to Bush House being given away for a media player I
don't use and suspect may be being harboured on my PC without my
knowing..... Might even be sending out bandwidth eating trash to other
wannabeebees:

In the last days of the Persian Empire, the heads of enterprises who
committed such folly would be fed alive, families and all, to lions.
Pity these days that in the vestiges of the British Empire such rules
for seriously sloppy management are not used.

I still don't know much about the crapphics used on the BBC. I do know
I want to know more about that and less about their presentations
using it. I pay very little attention to them these days.

Who knows, I might just get rid of the box. If I take the TV card out
or set it so it can't receive TV-in, I might even make a few bob on
the deal.

I hear that the latest BBC head hunchoh is looking at decentralising
the BBC as it is too Londonish. So is that a doublespeak thing or was
he pushed?

I thought Aliasdare Campbell was the Machinator in Chief at the BBC.
It turns out to be some bod called Lyons.

Reasonably cheap then?

How much do you believe the thing cost?

The operating system is nowhere near the most significant cost in
software like that. Linux was probably chosen for its flexibility over
Windows.
