It is odd that a site surrounded by water on three sides produces high
temperatures on such a regular basis. I can see why Heathrow or the LWC
are hot - it's all of the buildings and concrete. The only thing going
for Gravesend is its low altitude.

I also got a 27.5C on 23rd here in Wokingham. The max occurred quite late in
the afternoon, too, at 1631 GMT.

Dry now, but the site is really estuarine marshland, adjacent to mudflats. The
thermal characteristics of this surface are probably part of the answer, but it
is rather surprising. The site *has* often featured as warmest in UK, but has
only been running since since (I think) 1995. My student who tried to solve
this mystery investigated the effect of times of high / low water on maxima but
found no influence. The key explanatory variable for warmth relative to other
sites was southerly winds, and we tend to notice maxima in southerlies because
they tend to be high in summer! Advection of an urban warming effect from SE
London and the height differnece from the North Downs are probably thus part of
the explanation too.

Julian Mayes,
Univ of Surrey Roehampton & West Molesey. 0.4 mm in the early morning shower
here. It brings the monthly total to nearly 2mm!

Gravesend gets the high temps for the same reason the Medway Towns often
gets high temps. Gillingham has the highest recorded mid summers day
temperature in the country. The reason is: The North Downs are to the
south, at approx 700 feet above sea level. In a Southerly wind, air flows
down the gentle sloping North facing side of the Downs. As the air
gradually sinks towards sea level, it tends to warm up. The net result is
Gravesend, Medway and some other areas just to the North of the North Downs,
tend to be warmer, sunnier and drier than surrounding areas. An Esterly or
Northeasterly on the other hand tends to be very cool often with low cloud.
This setup in winter can produce bitterly cold conditions with large amounts
of snow.

Costa del Warden Bay, nr. Leysdown, Kent.
