"The studs need two hours of sunlight to power them for up to ten days." Solar power is least available when most needed seasonally, diurnally, and by weather regime. What's the betting they'll fade during a dull winter spell when much of any low angle sun will be blocked by trees, buildings etc. There are rumoured to be hills in parts of the UK also I gather. PS with no "bumpy feeling of running over" motorists only behave themselves when something's gonna hit them, eg bollards or kirbs. .................................................. ........... " You're almost as sensible as Boris Johnson! " " Madonna likes excercising with a capital S! " " Sebastion Coe doesn't deal in millions, that's small change! " " Shopaholics confuse quality time with wallety time ! " " You're only a professsional if you spin things round in circles until retirement! Presumably ordinary daylight, even on a dull winter day, will be sufficient to keep them topped up? Solar power is least available when most needed seasonally, diurnally, and by weather regime. Given that my cheap garden lights fail to operate on some winter evenings after a dull day you may have a point. PS with no "bumpy feeling of running over" motorists only behave themselves when something's gonna hit them, eg bollards or kirbs. If they do not protrude above the road surface we will be denied the audible feedback essential to staying on the road during thick fog! http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view...or-Cat-s-Eyes/ They were trialled on a stretch of the A1065 near RAF Lakenheath; they've been there for years now. They seem to work very well. Being LEDs, they have a flicker about them which is a bit annoying, and of course the most surprising thing of all is seeing them in your mirror (backwards). |

They have also been tested on a road near me (Minley Road leading to J4a of the M3), and they seemed pretty useless. When they were first installed they worked very well, and lit up a very dark stretch of road very clearly, but within a few months most of them had packed up and only about a third of them still worked. You'd think they could incorporate a standard cat's-eye type reflector as a back-up for when the LED doesn't work... |

Next to go: violin strings. I am actually rather soppy about pussycats. To be serious for a minute, I can't see what was wrong with the old cat's-eye reflectors. The fact that they protrude from the road a little can only be a good thing because if you can feel them you've wandered off the centre of your lane. This may well be quite legitimate during overtaking but the bumps will remind you to get back in lane. As to the claimed "70% reduction in accidents" attributed to the new technology I simply don't believe it. There must have been some statistical sleight-of-hand, or plain lies. Cats eyes anecdotes reminds me of a gag I heard on I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue - they mentioned the inventor of Cat's Eyes saw a pair of Cat's Eyes in the reflection of his car one night, and thus the invention came around. The next day, the cat was walking the other way and he invented the furry pencil-sharpener! Sorry. Richard |

They're on stretches of the A41 towards Tring, they seem to work pretty
well nice and bright, a few have packed up but no more than ordinary cats eyes.
