Default Winter arrives with a vengeance in the US

In article ,
says...
this from a press feed dated yesterday (13th) ...... [ one of many
over the past few days chasing this particular system across the
northern States]

" Winter-like storms blamed
for at least two dozen deaths in the central United States moved
east Thursday to the mid-Atlantic region and New England.
In Connecticut, state troopers responded to more than 100
crashes in the hours after the storm started, The Hartford Courant
reported. One of the worst hit areas was Hartford, Conn., where two
interstates meet in the center of the city. In Manchester, outside
Hartford, two tractor-trailers jackknifed, partly blocking an icy
I-84.
"We're holding our head above water," said Trooper William
Tate, a state police spokesman. "It's just a matter of getting
through the storm."
The National Weather Service predicted as much as 10 inches
of snow in parts of New Jersey and 6 inches in neighboring states.
In the central United States, thousands of people remained
without power after ice storms, with Oklahoma hit the worst. Hotels
were filled by people without electricity or heat at home, and
restaurants reported heavy business from those seeking a hot meal."

As a personal observer of this in Norman, Oklahoma, our power at home
went out at 1 AM local time Monday morning, so we're at 105 hours right
now. I'm somewhat optimistic that we'll get power back in the
neighborhood today or tomorrow, although freezing rain and snow are
forecast for the afternoon and overnight and I have no clue what impact
that will have on the crews. The power line that runs from the main
service line to our house is still up, although a ~6-inch diameter limb
is still laying on it and there are a couple of other small branches
hung on it, so we should come up as soon as the neighborhood gets
switched on. Our neighbor's power line is down on the ground in our
back yard. The box where it attaches to her house pulled off the house,
so she has to have electricians hook her up after the area service comes
on. We moved in with friends on Wednesday but I stopped by the house
this morning and the cold part of the house is at ~6 C. We have a
natural gas furnace, but it has an electric fan to blow the heat into
the house and a electric failsafe switch that turns it off if certain
conditions are met. It's intended to prevent gas leaking if the furnace
stops operating, but apparently power failure meets the criteria.

Some parts of the city have reportedly been told not to expect power
until sometime next week. About 30% of the customers in Norman are
still out.

Before we moved in with friends, my wife called hotels in town Wednesday
and there was one room available, at an exorbinant rate, because someone
had just left when their power came back on. To add to the fun, this
week was finals week for the fall semester at the University and today
was supposed to be graduation ceremonies for those students who finished
this fall. My Master's student who finished this fall had already
decided not to go through the ceremony (grad students get a choice and
his wife's finishing in the spring), so I'm not dealing with that hassle
today.
