Default Davis VP 2 - ISS Reception

I've had my VP 2 since March. Very happy with it and most of the time my
reception is almost 100% :-

www.troytheblacklab.co.uk/pics/good.jpg

But sometimes it drops dramatically :-

http://www.troytheblacklab.co.uk/pics/bad.jpg

I don't think it's a problem with my VP 2. I've tried to associate the
problem with things going on in the house/neighbours houses etc. but am
getting nowhere - problem happens middle of the day/middle of the
night/anytime.

Not really causing me serious problems but just wondered if anyone has any
ideas what could be causing it ?

TIA.

Default Davis VP 2 - ISS Reception

Hi,
I have had the same problem with the reception.
I dropped in a none regular interval.
After I postioned the console on a location where the time signal (DCF)
reception was better, the drops didntīt come back.
I hope this helps you.

Marc

Wrong weather station I'm afraid - the VP2 stations don't use DCF
reception.

The usual approach with this sort of problem is to try to look for
some pattern or correlation in the reception dropouts, which could be
due to either an incipient fault in the circuitry (almost certainly in
the ISS) or to interference. The VP2 stations are generally fairly
resistant to interference but a source of interference that's powerful
enough or close enough will inevitably lead to problems, as it will
for any sensitive wireless receiver.

Where serious intermittent interference is happening then cordless
phones located close to the console can be a cause (as can mobile
phones used nearby). It can sometimes be useful to run the console on
battery power alone (ie disconnect the mains power adapter) for a
period of days to rule out the possibility of mains-borne
interference. Also, if feasible, try moving the console position
substantially to see if this lessens or increases any interference.

If all of this draws a blank then there may be a fault developing.
Suggest you contact your supplying dealer for more detailed support.

I found that moving my console just a few inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm!) to a
position towards a better 'line of site' with the transmitter made a big
difference, even though there were still several walls in between.

Also it may be worth jiggling the outside aerial to ensure good contact -
maybe a little corrosion is possible.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Reception over the last week has been
almost perfect but I'm sure the problem will re-occur at some point and
when it does I'll try the suggestions (one by one).

Lots of cordless stuff in my house but the problems don't tie up with the
times of usage of these devices.

Ummm ... checked again - no problems since 20th December. Something to do
with the holiday period perhaps ?

Anyway - not serious - I'm more than happy with my VP 2. Guess where I got
it - thanks John Dann :-)

Thanks again for the help folks.

I certainly found that a cordless phone had a detrimental effect on my VP 1
when placed nearby. Your problem is quite typical of the VP 1 which has
nearly 100% reception for several weeks followed by a session of poor
reception which can usually be cured by moving the console slightly.

I was under the impression that the VP 2 works on a different reception
principle to the VP 1. This was introduced to resolve the reception problem
but it seems that is not always the case.

The VP2 has two differences in its wireless characteristics from the
VP1. First it broadcasts with around 8x the power (roughly 8mW
compared to 1mW) and this is the main reason for enhanced wireless
reception. Second it uses frequency hopping (FH) but in the OV
versions (which essentially cover most places in the world, including
the UK, apart from N America) the number of channels available for
hopping in the scientific telemetry band (868.0 - 868.7MHz) is small
and so FH has only a limited effect on reception though it may help
slightly to overcome spot frequency interference.
