Default SFUK data

Hi

first of all: happy new year to al!

We have noticed that SFUK (lightning reports) are apparently no longer
available...as maps:
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rsfloc.html
http://meteocentre.com/lightning/map...=en&map=Europe

and as raw-data since 11th of december:
http://www.atmos.albany.edu/weather/...e/surface/syn/

What's the reason? Has someone any idea, information?

Thanks and greetings

Joachim

This was asked on the NG a couple of weeks ago and Martin Rowley had an
answer. I take the liberty of repeating it below.
______________

" ... I'm told by a reliable source that consequent upon an upgrade of the
ATD system at Exeter (and allied outstations), the old-style SFLOC bulletins
are no longer generated and therefore sites which rely on these bulletins
have lost their access to such data. Whether there are plans to replace said
bulletins I don't know, but I understand that when EGRR asked various
'official' users of the bulletins whether they wanted them to continue, the
response was indifferent ;-( "
Martin."
______________

Very frustrating.

.... I haven't got anymore information apart from that I posted above;
as I understand things, the bulletins that used to appear under the
header "SFUK31 EGRR", in WMO code FM-82, are no longer generated as
there appeared to be little demand for them, at least in that format.
I believe that Exeter generate bulletins under different headers and
presumably in different formats (?BUFR and/or csv?) for NWSs because
these data are very valuable, but it presumably wasn't thought
necessary to continue with the code form above.

I can only advise that you try and make contact with Exeter Met Office
direct and see if they can provide you with an alternative; you are
not alone in asking - I believe others in Europe have been caught out
by this change, so the more requests made the better it would be.

Martin.

I know it will be a very poor substitute, but I have created a page
http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~brugge/web_thun.html
that will list recent reports of thunder as determined from 3-hourly SYNOPs.
Nothing showing yet.

A similar page
http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~brugge/web_snow.html
for snow is also available - also empty at the moment but
hopefully soon to contain some reports.

On meteocentre, in substitute, I created maps from the blitzortung
boltek network :
http://meteocentre.com/lastimg.php?l...DRE% 20BOLTEK
I still need to adjust the maps to create the same areas that were
done with SFUk data.
I still didn't find how to get access to the new ATD data. I am in
contact with the MetOffice.
We will see...

I made the modifications...

Under the old URLs for SFUK data, you will get similar plots made with
my data processing of blitzortung data : same geographical areas, last
30 min lightning activity, aggregated to 0.5 degrees (density) with
the same color legend and superimposition of CBs and thunderstorms
symbols. If ATD UK MetOffice data re-appear, I will put back this data
onto _sfuk suffix maps.

With suffix _boltek, the maps with the latest 3h lightning activity,
with a + for each impact.
