Default Highways Agency roadside weather

We recently discussed the weather information shown on the HA Traffic
England website.
http://www.highways.gov.uk/traffic/traffic.aspx click on map and select
'weather' - and wait

I contacted the HA asking if this data was from real roadside AWS or
elsewhere. The information I received is as follows

a) Where available, actual reporting stations within 3km of motorway
junctions are used
b) If there are no weather stations nearby then a weather model (resolution
10km by 10km)is used to produce the information
c) The temperature displayed is air temperature

Incidentally I can recommend the Traffic Scotland webcams

That's good, that. Could come in handy. They are certainly very close
together on the main roads.

Dave - I assume you mean the HA weather data. In the light of what I have
learned I would suggest they are not particularly valid

If you mean the Traffic Scotland webcams - yes, they could come in handy

Ah, I did mean the former. The temperatures looked ok and it said it wasn't
snowing anywhere! Like the Highways Agency, I better take them with a pinch
of salt then, so to speak.
thanks, Dave

There is a yawning gap between Leeds and the M6 J36 near Kendal (A65T).
There are many weather stations on this route.

Yes, they were extremely handy on Tuesday during the storm, when the
Forth Bridge was closed all day. I'd travelled east to Edinburgh looking
at 20 odd miles of queue on the westbound M9, knowing that I'd be at the
back of it soon after off loading at the airport. Just as I left the
base my better half phoned to say she was watching the cameras, and the
bridge had just that moment reopened. I was at the tolls, northbound for
Fife, before any announcement was made on the radio.

Thank you, Traffic Scotland

using the local ones round our area they are nigh on useless

the refresh rate of data for Joe soap to look at is a waste of time , I hope
the gov bods are getting a better refresh rate
