The 09-09h screen minimum this morning was 11.8°C. This is a long way
above the previous highest, on almost 50 years local (and reasonably homegenous) records, which was 11.1°C on 6 Jan 1983. The figure is 0.1 degC below yesterday's new January record night minimum (21-09h), 11.9°C. I only have 20 years' of 21-09h minimum records, but prior to yesterday and today there have been only three previous occasions in 20 years with a January 21-09h min of 11.0°C or more (in 1988, 2002 and 2007), the previous highest being 11.3°C in 2007. -- Stephen Burt Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire |

My record began in 1991, but the minimum of 11.7C in the last 24 hours was well above the previous highest of 9.8C in both 2002 and 2004. Dick Lovett Charlbury (Oxfordshire Cotswolds) 121m |

How common is it for January nights to be warmer than days? Surely it makes a bit of a mockery of the established method of quoting daily "average" temperature as the median of the 09-09 high and low? In these days of AWSs, is there a more of a case for calculating averages of, say, 10-minute periods (as for wind) - and what numerical difference would it generally make? Steve P Acton Bridge 38m |

Not all that uncommon, then (and your point about dwarfing other genuine climatological variations is well made). SP PS enjoyed your article in Jan's 'Weather' and cover photo. |
