Default [WR] Sanday, Thu Jan 31st - Breezy (but not as breezy as Cumbria!)

Highest 10-minute average wind speed last night was 50mph/43kts (F9) with a
peak gust of 65mph/56kts. More to come over the next day or so, it seems,
with maybe (dare I say hopefully?) the prospect of some proper snow for a
change.

Currently F7 SSW'ly, baro 967.4 falling rapidly, temp 3.7C (feels like/wind
chill -3C). Blustery wintry showers.

But it seems the highest wind speeds were around Carlisle? Peak gust of
84mph/73kts! And Paul Crabtree's web site confirms this: peak 10-minute
average 56mph/49kts (F10) with a peak gust of 83mph/72kts. Hopefully no
damage, Paul? Everything looks OK on your web cam.

What effect was at work to give that area apparently much higher speeds than
the surrounding areas?

Hi, Steve,

Wow, that's a high one from Paul!
Highest 10min here was 39KT/45mph (upper F8) from SW at 0650Z max gust
51KT/59mph. That was as the CF passed through, so perhaps the CF was
involved at Brampton.

Peak here was 0300 to 0400 more or less F9. Max gust 58mph @ 0325 but that
is a couple of mph above it nearest neighbours. Most where low 50's mph.

That was as the CF passed through, so perhaps the CF was involved at
Brampton.

Temp was still on the rise with the peak winds until just after 0600.
Between then and 0730 it took a couple of step downs. Max just before the
first step 4.3C now steady ish at just over 1C. Occasional short
hail/sleet showers coming through.
