I refer to the earlier post from 1969. I can remember this winter quite
well in the West Riding of Yorkshire, particularly on at least two occasions during February which were a week apart and I believe these were Friday's. The snow was deep and and the wind strong with severe drifting. The cold lasted into the March of the same year and was accompanied by an easterly which brought the worst freezing rain event I can ever remember - it culminated with the colapse of Emley Moor TV transmitter in the Pennines. It rained all day onthe 19th March with the temperature at -2 C. The most memorable snow event however, over these parts and beyond from the point of view of drifting and severe cold occured onValentine's day 1979. Thickness values were sub 510DM and winds were inthe region of 30Kt from the East with a temperature of -5C.; The air was leaving the Denmark coast at a temperature of -12 C. This year there was talk of a mini ice age!! Rob Farsley Near Leeds |
