Default February sunshine - Hurn, Dorset

Using the historical figures for Hurn (available on the Met Office web
site), [which start December 1968], it looks as if this February's
monthly total will be close to, or exceed the previous 'high' recorded
in February, 1988.

The figure for that event (Campbell Stokes recorder, CSR) was 138.1
hr.

This month just ending (up to sunset yesterday/27th), if I've added
the daily figures up correctly, Hurn has recorded (using the Kipp &
Zonen sensor), 131 hr. Scaling this up, using the relationship
published by Kerr & Tabony ('Weather', 2004), this gives an
approximate CSR equivalent of 140 hr.

February 1988 was also a Leap Year, though the length of the month is
irrelevant to this year's total as we've reached the figure with a
couple of days to spare.

Looking at the areal series for the UK (also available on the Met
Office web site) which starts 1929, February 1988 was within the
'top-5' of sunniest such-named months, so although the Hurn record is
relatively short, it is probably significant that we've comfortably
reached/exceeded that value.
